Blood Clots

Blood Clots

Blood clots in the legs are a critical health concern requiring prompt treatment. The most perilous type, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), occurs within deep leg veins and can lead to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism if a clot dislodges and reaches the lungs. An ultrasound examination helps detect DVT.

A less severe form, superficial vein thrombophlebitis (SVT), occurs in surface veins and is generally not as dangerous. However, an ultrasound examination is still recommended to ensure the clot doesn't extend into deeper veins. SVT usually requires compression hose and anti-inflammatory medication for treatment, although blood-thinning medication may be necessary in some cases.

Various risk factors contribute to DVT and SVT, such as cancer, medical procedures, varicose veins, vein reflux, pregnancy, immobilization, prolonged sitting, inactivity due to illness, injury to a vein, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, hormonal factors, family history, and specific gene mutations.
