Veins & Pregnancy

Veins & Pregnancy

Pregnancy significantly impacts women's veins due to increased blood volume and the effects of the hormone progesterone, causing vein dilation. While veins ideally return to normal after pregnancy, many women experience persistent vein dilation, especially with subsequent pregnancies or pre-existing varicose veins.

Wearing compression hose is advised for pregnant women, tailored to the severity of their vein issues. Modern treatments for vein conditions are effective and less invasive, contrary to the old advice of waiting until after pregnancies for treatment. Addressing vein issues before subsequent pregnancies can enhance comfort and prevent recurring varicose veins.

During pregnancy, apart from wearing compression hose, no other vein treatments are recommended. Post-pregnancy, an evaluation should be scheduled after at least 60 days to allow veins to shrink. Evansville Regional Vein Center provides tailored assistance and sclerotherapy for persistent vulvar varicose veins after delivery. Planning a visit before subsequent pregnancies is advisable for maintaining vein health.
